Exporting an Atlantic Success Story
Chuck Cartmill, founder and president of one of the country's most successful and highly respected rep firms, Halifax-based CSA Enterprises, has ventured forth from Atlantic Canada to set up shop in Ontario.
At the end of May, Toronto-based Reptech, with Gary Popowich as principle contact, was handling two product lines: FRE re-inforced epoxy conduit and Spider cable terminating systems. While plans call for adding more lines, the firm will limit the total number relative to other reps in order to specialize.
After 20 years as an east coast rep, says Cartmill, it was time to bring the ideas, procedures, and expertise developed in CSA to new markets. "Now that we've got it packaged, we're opening it up here and seeing how it flies," he says. CSA, he adds, may be used as a training ground for some Reptech employees.
CSA Enterprises has won the Electrical Business Manufacturers' Representative of the Year Award three times, more than any other Canadian rep. The award is sponsored by the Canadian Electrical Manufacturers' Representatives Association. Reptech takes calls 24 hours a day at (416) 674-8422, cellular (416) 399-2540. fac (416) 675-0057.

CEMRA honours best rep, best supplier
CSA Enterprises Ltd. was named 1993 Manufacturers Representative of the Year and Gould Shawmut Co. Ltd., Manufacturer of the Year, at the Annual Conference in September of the Canadian Electrical Manufacturers Representatives Association (CEMRA).
This is the third time that CSA, based in Bedford, Nova Scotia, has won the award, which is only in its fourth year. The award is presented annually by Kerrwil Publications Ltd., publishers of Electrical Business, and is based on a survey of electrical distributors and manufacturers across the country.
In presenting Gould Shawmut's award, CEMRA Executive Director Don Mockford said CEMRA members commended the company for being "a pleasure to represent" and for its "significant contribution to the industry through education".

CEMRA Awards for 1991
For the second year running CSA Enterprises of Bedford, Nova Scotia has won the Electrical Business/CEMRA Manufacturers Representative of the Year Award. CSA also won last year's inaugural award.
CSA's president Chuck Cartmill was presented with the award by Hugh McBride, editor of the Electrical Business, at The Canadian Electrical Manufacturers Representatives Association's (CEMRA) tenth annual conference - held this year in Halifax.
CSA does much work on high technology products and employs skilled sales staff many of them with the Certified Engineering Technologist accreditation.
In presenting the award to Cartmill, CSA Enterprises was applauded for its work and research undertaken in the area of explosive requirements - Cartmill is himself considered to be one of the country's leading experts in this area.
The award is based on a survey of over 500 electrical distributors across Canada.
CEMRA's Manufacturer of the Year Award (1991) this year went to Toronto's Gould Shawmut Company. Gould Shawmut's sales and marketing manager, John Sencich, in receiving the award, noted that the award was for all members of the Gould Shawmut's staff.
The award is presented annually to the manufacturer whom in the opinion of CEMRA has contributed to the electrical industry, to the programs of CEMRA and goes to market through the independent manufacturers representative.

Nova Scotia man named Rep of the Year
CSA Enterprises of Bedford, Nova Scotia, has won the first annual Electrical Business/CEMRA Manufacturers Representative of the Year Award.
CSA's President Chuck Cartmill accepted the award here September 15 while attending the Ninth Annual Business Conference of the Canadian Electrical Manufacturers Representatives Association (CEMRA).
The award was presented to Cartmill by Electrical Business Publisher John Kerr in the form of an Inuit sculpture.
CSA Enterprises was chosen Rep of the Year based on a survey of over 500 electrical distributors across Canada. Many of the 412 responses praised Cartmill's company for its quality of service and technical expertise and its "high ethical standard" of business conduct.
Cartmill started the company in 1973. Today the company has 12 employees at offices in St. John's, Nfld; Moncton and Fredericton, NB; and in Bedford. Cartmill's wife Claire does all the firm's bookkeeping.
CSA concentrates on high-technology products. Skilled sales personnel, many of them with the Certified Engineering Technologist accreditation, are employed as problem solvers and technical experts in order to give customers something more than products at a good price.
Each salesperson travels in a Chrysler Caravan equipped with a cellular telephone and a laptop computer. "We spend a lot of time training our people, probably more than anyone in the industry," Cartmill says.
CSA also strives for a close working relationship with every member in the distribution network. "We look for long-term relationships with both manufacturers and distributors."
The agency announced last month plans to open a branch office in the state of Maine. The Canadian/US Free Trade Agreement, according to Cartmill, has brought about a big increase in the flow of electrical product across the border. In particular, commodity products are coming into Canada at greater volumes than ever and at low prices.
There is also a shortage of agents in Maine, Cartmill says, and the few that exist tend to sell less sophisticated products than CSA. There's not only room for another agent in the state, he believes, but for one with an expertise in high-tech products.
